Intro To Fashion Sewing (ITFS)
…is a beginner course for students age 10-17 who are new to machine sewing or have some sewing experience but may be new to garment sewing. In this jam packed week we walk you step by step through two fun, customizable projects that introduce fundamental sewing skills and garment construction techniques and prepare you to begin using patterns and tutorials independently.
PLUS…in this 15 hour immersive summer version of ITFS (usually 12 hrs over 8 wks) you get the opportunity to dig deeper into planning and designing your projects, rendering them uniquely yours!
What’s in store…
During class you will make the Shopper Tote and Sunday Shorts by Fashion Kit Patterns, learn how to operate the sewing and serger machines, safely use the iron, sketch and illustrate designs, and much much more! Once you complete the core projects you may move on to another Fashion Kit project of your choice (appropriate for your skill level) Daily Agenda…
01 MOOD BOARD MONDAY
Begin the week with an introduction to fabrics, hardware, styling, and creative self expression. After we introduce the projects you will swatch fabrics, gather trims, sketch your ideas, and put together a visual representation of your mini collection. For the last hour you will learn how to properly cut, lay out, and pin your Shopper Tote pattern and prepare your project for sewing!
02 READY, SET, SEW!
Review of studio safety followed by a brief intro to to the sewing machine, how to set it up, and sewing machine safety. Then, jump right into practicing sewing and threading your machine. Learn the importance of keeping an even seam allowance and tips to stay on track. You will sew the majority of your Shopper Tote and learn how to use the iron.
03 FINISHING TECHNIQUES | SERGER PRACTICE | BODY MEASUREMENTS
Learn how to turn a fully lined project, all about top stitching, and using specialty presser feet to get a nice professional finish as you finish up your Shopper Tote.
Learn about finishing garment seams using the serger. Practice keeping steady control of the pedal.
Learn how to properly measure your body, determine your size according to pattern instructions, make adjustments according to finished measurements. Layout and cut the Sunday Shorts before we end for the day.
04 PANTS CONSTRUCTION | POCKETS + TRIMS
Finish cutting shorts, construct pockets (optional) and add trims before putting shorts together. Practice using the serger on curved seams before sewing your final garment. Learn how to sew a U-seam, create a hem, create a casing and insert a drawstring. Try out the grommet press. Introduction to Fashion Kit video instructions.
05 PHOTO BOOTH FRIDAY! FINISH PROJECTS
Finish up shorts. Have fun with your friends and your makes in our fashionista photo booth! If you finish early you may free sew or work on a small project (matching zipper pouch, scrunchies!)

ITFS is a prerequisite for all other studio apprentice level courses. Upon completion of the course students may move on to other Fashion Kit Patterns projects in subsequent weeks of camp OR will be eligible to take apprentice level courses in the fall. We will guide you to the right next step in the program.
Each student has their own designated sewing station for the week.
Premium fabrics are included.
We provide a snack and water but feel free to bring your own snacks. We have a water cooler and encourage students to bring a water bottle to reduce paper cup waste.
