WHY SEW WITH US?
For starters…we have just as much fun teaching sewing as our students have learning it! We love sharing our craft in interesting new ways while giving our students a solid skills foundation to become confident designers themselves.. Our projects are modern, thoughtful, inventive, and bold. Our program is intentional, tested, and constantly evolving to meet the needs and interests of our sewing community.
WE BELIEVE CHILDREN LEARN BETTER BY DOING SOMETHING THEY ARE INVESTED IN, AND GROW STRONGER BY TAKING PRIDE IN THEIR WORK.
At the heart of it…we believe children (and everyone else) learn better by doing something they are invested in, and grow stronger by taking pride in their work. The goal of our project based curriculum is to keep students engaged in a process that challenges their thinking and includes their interests.
With that philosophy in mind we developed a program that strikes a balance between challenge and fun. We figure if our students are into what they are creating At every level we strive to provide age appropriate yet sophisticated projects, relevant themes, premium materials, and “proper” instruction….meaning real scissors, real needles, real adult sewing machines, and REAL empowerment.
A SOLID FOUNDATION
Developing the skills to sew projects independently with confidence is one part conceptual, one part technique, and 10 parts practice! Since fine motor skills and abstract thought develop closer to adolescence our Sewing Foundations program for ages 6-10 is all about creativity and practice.
We break down the steps so they are easy to follow. The secret to becoming good at almost anything is finding joy in doing it over and over so our Sewing Foundations program centers around that just that…finding the joy. At age 6, 7, 8 fine motor skills are still developing and logic is more concrete than abstract. We find it far more effective to guidance as we introduce next steps and new skills in a super fun project. Along the way we offer opportunities to correct errors, refine visions, improve, and elaborate on ideas.
As students grow older we introduce projects that require more creative and imaginative problem solving in our Junior Sewing courses (Age 8-10). While we don’t repeat projects over and over, we often focus on a theme for the term. We find value presenting variations of similar projects to reinforce concepts and skills. The ability to “reinventing from a template” is really the hallmark of a good designer. Any designer can dream up fantastic and glorious creations but we are interested in giving young people the tools to get their creations built…and built well!
ROAD MAP TO MASTERY
Junior Sewing students moving on to our Studio Sewing program seamlessly transition into garment sewing, fashion design, and higher level accessory and quilting projects. If you’ve never sewn before by age 11 you’re in the right place! We teach you all the basics from the ground up in Intro to Fashion Sewing.
Armed with foundation garment sewing skills From there students move on to individual garment sewing courses that go step-by-step from sketch to finished garment
The designer focuses mostly on style and concept and creating the look they want while the pattern maker brings it to life in a more technical way. It is necessary to have a basic knowledge of pattern making so that a designer can design clothing that is possible to be made.
help students move students toward mastery encouraging alternative ways to process previously introduced concepts and information.
The Sewing Foundations program is structured to allow students at any level of experience to start where they are comfortable and continue learning and growing from there. We assess each child when they enter into the program, then set goals to build on strengths and introduce new concepts. Peer mentoring and leadership is an important part of our program at any level as learning is reinforced by observing peers tackling similar challenges and by demonstrating mastery of skill.
