Intro to Fashion Sewing (Grades 4-8) 

Age 11-15 (Grade 5+)Beginners + Improvers. No experience necessary. Learn fundamental sewing skills, construction techniques, and design basics in this super fun, jam packed, beginner garment sewing course. In 3 cool projects you learn how to operate the sewing and serger machines, use patterns, cut fabric, construct your first professional looking garments and accessories, and much more! This course is an excellent starting point if you are a complete beginner who has never sewn before OR you have a few projects under your belt but no experience sewing garments. Students in 5th grade and above who complete the ITFS core projects or equivalent can move on to other apprentice level courses.

  • Threading and use of the sewing machine

  • Fabric choice, using interfacing

  • Reading and laying out patterns

  • Preparing and cutting garment pieces

  • Lined bag construction

  • Taking body measurements for fit

  • Basic pant construction, Hemming

  • proper use of the iron and serger machine


During class students make the Fashion Kit Shopper Tote, Sunday Shorts (Lounge pants in winter), and an infinity scarf.

  • Premium apparel fabric and materials

  • 2 Fashion Kit patterns + digital instructions

  • Dedicated station with Eversewn Sparrow 25 or 30 sewing machine

  • Cutting tables, tools and notions.


Students must complete 3 core ITFS projects or equivalent to move on to other Apprentice Level classes, workshops, and camps. Upon entering the program or finishing a term students are individually assessed based on skill level and areas of interest so we can recommend an appropriate course of study.
